accept that math for math's sake is pointless and that if you can use math as a tool for real science, then you are using math for its intended purpose
it's like if you're good enough to use an axe to split firewood, but you're not good enough with an axe to throw it at a tree and make it stick, to use it to shave your face, or do to any other tricks with it. Well no one REALLY cares if you can do these things with an axe; sure they might be impressive stunts, but an axe is just a tool for splitting wood. That's how it is with math. It's just a tool for doing real science.
