if you watch Lenny Susskind’s intro lectures on string theory on yt you will find he discusses this.
however the current consensus on string theory is very ambivalent—it doesn’t matter what strings are made of or if they’re fundamental since actually there are a lot of “dual” ways to answer that question and in any case we “don’t really know” what string theory “really is” (according to Witten and everyone else)
