Going forward in time fucks with the timeline in the same way as the present like when Marty stops his kid going to jail. Doc brown carried the information into the past to Marty and went foward and changed the future. That changed the timeline. You have to go forward or to the present to verify the changes. He could have just told Marty to be a better parent LOL.
