Animals are basically aliens but no one cares and just takes them for granted. If humans really cared about what aliens could bring to the table, they'd focus on artificially boosting animals' intelligence. There's no reason a lot of animals like dogs, dolphins, etc couldn't attain human level intelligence and communication ability if scientists actively worked on it.
