Rocks don't have enough density to fly very far and be effective. Lead weights made for slings are best, and what Roman Legions used.

This. Also, you typically have to make a compromise between range and accuracy. Longer slings will be more powerful, but also make aiming much more difficult. My guess is the people boasting about really long shots are using the longest slings possible and lead bullets for maximum range.

The record for longest home run is just shy of 180 meters... and that's just hitting a ball with a stick.

On level ground at a 45 degree angle you need a launch velocity of about 55 m/s (125 mph) to hit 300 m. I can buy that.

Standard 9mm is 7 grams and fires at 360 m/s, that's a momentum of ~2.5 Ns.
You could get the same stopping power with a 50 g lead shot slung at just 50 m/s... possibly as little as half that if they hit with some elasticity instead of just going through or stopping inside.

Turns out, the world record for longest sling shot is ~477m, using a 127cm long sling, and a 62g dart as the projectile. Set in 1992.

You are weak, your technique is bad and your sling is bad. You are also likely not cheesing the conditions. The Guinness record for longest shot is 477 meters. With autism and training you could probably go further.
