doesn't it take big ass pre-built rocket sites and millions of dollars worth of equipment to escape Earth's athmosphere?
how would Mars astronauts go back after they have landed?

Mars has 1/3 of earth's gravity and the rocket equation is exponential. Starsihp can do a SSTO (single stage to orbit) on Mars.
Propellant will be produced on site: Energy + CO2 + 2H2 => CH4 + O2

Mars sucks, it's literally the most pointless and worthless planet in the solar system.
Gravity too low to maintain normal bone density, but high enough to make launching spacecraft expensive.
Atmosphere makes re-entry dangerous but isn't breathable or useful in the slightest.
Mostly composed of poisonous dust, may have some mineral deposits but almost certainly fewer of them than Earth, Mercury or the asteroids. The dead plate tectonics also mean that new mineral deposits haven't been forming so erosion has likely worn away any significant ones and spread them out to a concentration that isn't worth exploiting.
Hardly any magnetic field to speak of so you get fucked by radiation unless you hide deep underground.
I literally cannot think of a single thing that Mars has going for it aside from lots of empty dust fields. Would be a great planet to dump all our junk on I guess.
