Consciousness is a concept that doesn't actually exist.

We have no evidence for free will that is inherently uninfluenced by environmental factors, as of this moment.

Anything you consider "consciousness" is just the result of physical interactions that started whenever this universe was created.

There is no verifiable free will, so there is no inherent conscious activity.

You are just a sum of physical interactions, dictated by the laws of this universe.

There is no more evidence for us not having free will than there is for us having it. You’re using a fallacy where since there’s no proof either way you become unreasonably skeptical of what you initially believed intuitively compared to its alternative to overcompensate for your natural tendency to believe an unscientific thing.
Also given the fact that if we really do lack free will we’re completely incapable of perceiving it we might as well just assume we have it because the world, our lives and our actions make more sense that way

We have no idea. You're asking a question that science can not answer. There is no part of the brain that governs consciousness. It all kinda just comes together to do it and we don't know why. Consciousness itself is one of the most perplexing things in the entire universe.

I had a random, very brief and mild "enlightenment" experience at around 13/14 when this occurred to me while I was on a bench by the beach. Just considering that perhaps what I call I, is the same as what everyone else calls I.

Then I got distracted. I think my parents asked if I want ice cream or some shit and I lost the moment. I remember that though, and some other moments near that... But then I developed anxiety disorder, so I'm never relaxed enough to enter these states anymore...

In the beginning the organisms just reacted to touch.
At some point a brain was needed to anticipate what a nearby smell meant.
In time, the brain got more complicated and at some point its predictions included its own state when solving what to do next.
Consciousness is this non-stop deja vu.
