Taking a "designer human" approach as opposed to a direct hybridization approach should mitigate at least a few of the many, many ethical, sociological, cultural, and religious conflicts that would inevitably ensue. The cat girls MUST be sufficiently breedable by normal humans; this was non-negotiable from the start.
How will it work?
Honestly, probably not well. It would create an entirely new ethnic/racial group that would be an immediate target of innumerable entities, it is arguably "playing God", the process of turning it into reality would be immensely difficulty and likely bring into this world man-made abominations the likes of which this world has never seen, and uncountable stillbirths.
For example, one of the social ramifications may be catcels; Men find the idea of catgirls hot, as cats are typically recognized as a somewhat feminine creature, but what of the catboys? What of the catmen? Would regular human women reciprocate such attraction? Or would you have an entire, definitively homogenous population of young men who feel that the world sees that as nothing more than a byproduct, created by a select group of people in pursuit of exactly NOT them? How pissed would they be? Would there someday be a Catboy Revolt? Will the heightened senses and athleticism make them a definitive Übermensch, and will they seek what the feel is their rightful domination of their perceived lessers (legacy humans)? Or will they see themselves as abominations, and seek self-destruction at all costs?
