While I can't remember where I read it, I also remember reading something about new generations declining in some areas (I think it was something to do with map reading), they were increasing in other areas like their capacity for abstract thought. Of course, people can make the argument that younger generations are relying on external objects (e.g. calculators) more and more but surely that would make sense from an evolutionary perspective? Off-loading mental processes and saving energy / diverting resources to the more important tasks would seem to be the more efficient answer; Like outsourcing work at your office rather than having to do every single thing in-house.
