yeah, here's an example
this guy (mit guest lecture) says it's required by e.g. SEC for trading firms to quantify their probability of losing money (risk) and to do that you need to know if your tail is fat and if you see your tail is fat then you know you have a much larger future risk
it's just probability, you really really really should get to know about it. literally everyone should.
