Hey CERN-frens. So, for those familiar with quantum physics, I have some questions.

What are all the "particles"? Like, who/what are you talking about in your articles talk about "quarks", and "gluons" etc.

>And I don't mean to be rude, but if you say this isn't /sci/, kindly just go fuck off to one of the other threads asking the scientific ramifications of the sky being blue instead of green.

This is an oversimplification, but it will have to do. The neutron and proton are made up of smaller particles called quarks. The quarks are held together by fields called gluons which are similar in some ways to the electromagnetic field, but there's eight of them and the analogue of Maxwell's equations are non-linear and hard to solve.

Anyway protons and neutrons are made up of three quarks, but other particles you haven't heard of can be made up of two quarks (a quark and an anti-quark). For a long time, all of the particles we observed were either made up of three quarks or two quarks. Now in the last 20 years they've found "particles" made up of 4 quarks, but they are very unstable and tend to split up into two two-quark particles right away.

I get that many systems have symmetries, but why is that hailed as the be-all of physics? Like the forces of nature are defined by some symmetry?

Field is like an electric field but instead of having some force represented by a vector in each point theres an operator defined at each point. So its called operator field rather than vector field. You may hear terms like vector field or scalar fields in this quantum context but its just horrible sloppy language. So for instance a " scalar field" means an operator field where theres only a single operator on each point, while a vector field means multiple operators defined at each spacetime point.

2. Wigner's theorem. Why particle physics? is a relevant question since 1. didn't seem to require much particle shit. Wigner's theorem is the statement that a particle with spin $s$ has $2s+1$ degrees of freedom if it's massive, but 2 if it's massless. This is important because it tells you how to build a theory on the spot. Say you imagine a massive spin-0 particle: a scalar field is sufficient to describe this, because it has 1 degree of freedom. This turns out to give you the Klein-Gordon equation. The nonrelativistic limit would give the Schrodinger equation. That's trivial, so what about higher spin, say massless spin-1? So you'll then say let's try a 4-vector, and you write down some simple terms that look Lorentz invariant, and look at what you get. In that case, the simplest thing you can get is actually the sourceless Maxwell Lagrangian, and to remove the extra degrees of freedom in that 4-vector (which is your potential of course) you have gauge invariance. So what we've done is waved a wand and obtained Maxwell's equations from nothing but symmetry and the existence of a particle with certain spin and mass properties. Repeating this for spin-2 gives the graviton, and its gauge conditions are essentially general relativity (invariance under smooth coordinate changes, basically) although with the caveat that this is perturbative, whereas general relativity is actually non-perturbative.
Massive spin-1 would give you something similar to the massless spin-1 case (the Proca Lagrangian), except without the gauge invariance you get in electromagnetism, and these particles would be W/Z bosons, etc. (cont)

Now say you have massive spin 1/2. The Lorentz algebra actually decomposes into irreducible representations with half-integer spin, and the objects those representations act on are spinors. They're basically like "square roots" of vectors, and finding an invariant equation with spinor objects gets you Dirac's equation $\bar\psi(i\not\partial-m)\psi=0$ which sort of looks like the square root of the massive spin-1 (Klein-Gordon) equation $(\partial^2+m^2)\phi=0$ and Dirac's equation describes the electron (and positron - the existence of antiparticles also immediately follows). You can then start doing all sorts of other shit too, like just adding your massless spin-1 (photon) terms to your massive spin-1/2 (electron) action and you get the interaction of electrons with light (scalar QED).
All of this comes purely from symmetry.
What's more is that you also get additional qualities for free, for example you don't need to actually impose CPT from the outset - just write down the simplest possible massive spin-1/2 Lagrangian you can imagine, and you find that it will emerge naturally. This makes it an extremely powerful tool, and doing particle physics often makes you feel like a gigachad (until you remember you're a NEET) summoning the laws of the universe from like the absolute bare minimum

There are two good ways to think about mesons. One is that a meson is a bound state of a quark and anti-quark sort of like an atom. This atom picture actually works very well for heavy quarks, but it is not so good for the more ordinary light quarks.

The other picture is that all of space is permeated by a condensate of quark fields, very much like the Higgs field you may have heard about. The lightest mesons, pions, are waves in this quark field condensate.

Its like a rotation in Hilbert space, you can see them as representatives of some SU(n) or U(n) group (in infinite dimensional representation). DOESNT HAVE SHIT TO DO WITH POINCARE OR OR IRREDUCIBLE REPRESENTATIONS ANY UNITARY GROUP DOES.

The idea comes from quantum field theory which is a relativistic theory so must involve a representation of the Lorentz group as unitary operators on the Hilbert space, as well as the ordinary space and time translations associated to momentum and energy. A state representing a *stable* particle all alone in the universe will always be that same stable particle, so it is easy to see how it transforms under the Poincare group. An explicit representation is given be associating a four momentum to the state (this tells how the time and space translations act), and then the remaining spin indices are given by boosting the four momentum to some arbitrary reference momentum, and only considering those members of the Lorentz group which keep that reference momentum fixed. This subgroup will just be the rotation group, so the irreducible representations of this are the usual spin representations in quantum mechanics.

So this explicitly constructs an irreducible representation associated to a stable particle. Less trivial is to see that any general state in the Hilbert space breaks up into a sum of tensor products of these single particle irreducible representations. I don't know a mathematical proof, but the "physical proof" is that this is what is underlying the in and out states that span the Hilbert space in the S matrix approach. If you leave an arbitrary state isolated in the universe sitting long enough it will break up into its stable one particle components, and these will become so separated in space that they no longer interact, and effectively form a tensor product of one particle representations. Ditto for going back in time.
