So they fixed this issue by designing the telescope to be able to mitigate the issue Hubble had. That would have been great on Hubble, but if some design flaw arises with Webb it isn't going to be the problem Hubble had. They have taken pains to not repeat mistakes they've made before. The problems that might arise are going to be precisely the problems that no one would have foreseen.

Yes.

The mission has a 10 year nominal timeline there are many things that could go wrong and cut that short. But if it makes some pretty pictures and major discoveries in the first few years it will be a success.

I agree. I hope the half a century of experience in space, addition to the decade spent designing Webb, that they have been able to account for almost anything. After all, they are literally designing this in a vacuum; there are only so many things that can happen 1 million miles away.

I just wonder how much their work on JWST would go to reducing costs of other satellites and something tells me it isn't very much. Where is the proverbial black box that various instruments can be attached to and just launched into space. I guess that doesn't extend further than the launch platform.

They were able to test individual systems in a vacuum chamber but it was too large to do an integration test inside a vacuum. Hopefully that won't matter but it is a risk that they couldn't test directly. I'm guessing they did integration tests of as many overlapping permutations as possible to reduce this risk.

I guess I don't know how law works. presumably there is a maximum sentence for property damage that wasn't intended for something of this magnitude, but I'm sure clever lawyers could dig through the law books and find some archaic 17th century law with a draconian punishment to slap on you

There is the big question mark?

To live the atmosphere the speed need to be at least 40 000 km/h. Right.

In the Webb gadget there’re 4 small thrusters to make position corrections and 400 kg fuel for them. Right.

It’s told that to get the gadget into the position (L2) about 1,5 million kms ‘behind’ the earth , looked from the sun, it takes 30 days. Right.

The Earth travels around the sun on the track which is 942 000 000 kms with the speed 108 000 km/h. Right.

During the 30 days (720 hrs) the earth has traveled about 78 million kms on it’s track. Right.

To keep with the earth the Webb gadget has to increase it’s speed into 108 665 km/h. Right.

How this is done? How the position is quaranteed? Tracks are curvature.
