look into abstract algebra.
it's just a set with some operations defined that act like addition and multiplication but with fewer guarantees (like there doesn't have to be additive identities and inverses)

It’s a generalization of the structure of addition and multiplication with natural numbers. However since it’s a weak generalization, it turned out to be useful for many other things and to have a rich structure theory. They’re inbetween groups which are literally a part of everything and fields which most of the elementary theory is just seeing how to extend them and how certain algebraic techniques correspond to extensions.
