A basic textbook on Astronomy will get you started in, but your understanding will only amount to memorization of formulae, facts, etc. In order to truly understand and appreciate Astronomy (or any science), you need to understand the Mathematics behind it; what the phenomena means empirically. This isn't entirely necessary for doing basic stuff, but I'd say it's worth it in order to be able to better appreciate Astronomy.
