heres some drama for you - most people you will meet in academia is a selfish asshole who will bring down others if given the chance.
I one time at uni went for a consult to a researcher who was working on a similar issue as I was, but in a different research group. We talked, but no quality advice was given to me. Next day my PI comes and tells me that the other research group is accusing of "attempting to steal the research secrets (lol wat) of the other group". I GOT ACCUSED OF THEFT BECAUSE I ASKED FOR HELP. This "adventure" landed me and my colleagues in hot water for about a week, but finally got out of it.

Moral of the story - stick to your own work, collaborate with no-one, trust no-one, as no-one for help, you are alone in this

And that there's no reliable way to filter between "asshole waiting to reveal it once you're in deep enough" and "genuine person looking to further the body of knowledge together who hasn't given up on collaborating".

I would have grilled this "PI" and/or prefessor and anyone higher for this, hard. Theyre not my boss and I DEMAND better education for my money. This is the kind of shit that makes higher education worthless (compared to what it Should be.)

You're not a buyer, and yes you are being sold as a PhD student. You are one step above slave labour and you have next to zero leverage. Picking fights even when you're in the right can wind up with your career being tanked before it ever starts. You shouldn't ever start fights as a PhD student unless you have no other choice, and in this case the problem went away after a week.

No, it was removed because the critical factor in diagnosing a mental disorder as a disorder is that it must cause internal distress for the person with it. Once it was realized that fags only suffer because society hates them, it was taken out as there are no internal factors doing that.

This is so depressing.
I wanna try getting into academia after some years of industry software dev work while doing my masters, but I read shit like this all the time and cannot believe it. Maybe I was just lucky, but working for companies as a software dev was so relaxed and nice. Everyone was just nice and helped each other. However, as a kid I always had the dream of being "one of the scientists", but money was a problem and I had to take care of that myself to not burden my parents (and I hate leeching money in general).
It was only in school when I rarely encountered pieces of shit who behaved like egotistical lunatics.
Did all these assholes move to academia? Is it so easy? Or does it depend on the field? All these stories about stealing work from others, talking shit behind backs and narcissistic behavious just doesn't make sense. Does all the progress come from industrie/companies?

I don't even think wanting to be the best is bad, it's good to have some kind of motivation, but do most academics just treat each other like shit because of that? From my experience so far, if all co workers treat each other like shit, we wouldn't work with profit and collapse after some time. I just imagine a team of developers all shitting on each other while the deadline draws near and nothing productive has been accomplished for months. Now I don't have any experience with working in academia, maybe the vision of a team of researchers working on something is wrong. It just seems unrealistic, I think most "horror stories" about this are overexaggarated or outright wrong.

It's definitely not most in my experience, but they would be a lot more guarded if say, you're from a competing research group working on the same problem, because if they give the "trade secrets" away, your group can publish first and take precedent in the discovery. And if you make more discoveries, you get more prestige and more funding, and more and possibly better graduate students, etc.

Ok to put it in better perspective for me, research groups are sometimes like rival companies because they could lose hard earned information to the other group. This and the increase in funding makes total sense. It's a competitive environment. As long as the research group members are nice to each other it sounds bearable.

I'm being halfway facetious, but this is the situation. I have written papers where the whole project from the top level of finding a good problem, coming up with a new idea, and doing all the technical calculations were done by me, only to put my (semi-famous) advisor's name on the paper at the end, who everyone else assumes is the real author. I have tried to give good problems I don't have time for to grad students or less creative postdocs to outsource my ideas, but I have had mixed success with that. I've maybe only met a couple coauthors that I feel earned their name on the paper. It's a political game to find those good people, manage the parasites that can possibly get you a job, and deal with the lazy peons you want to put in time on your own ideas because they aren't as good
