The problem is every dog is pumping out inconsequential shit that no one cares about, thus smothering the little of substance under a mound of garbage. Much the same way resumes and CVs are puff pieces, everyone is on the self promotion wagon, actual science plays an entirely secondary role, degenerating science into a rat race rather than genuine inquiry.
Your best bet is to forget about any esoteric aims and merely analyze the papers that do get published, looking for connections between reviewers and fashionable trends. Then get lots of practice sucking cock. Or else do something pragmatic and market an invention of your own, or stolen, merely using your credential as part of the advertising.
