To be fair, most criticisms of the the American educational system’s lax grading are primarily applicable to the humanities, at least from what I have seen. It makes sense that arts departments are more responsible for the meteoric rise of the average college student’s GPA, as their subjective, amorphous standards are better able to accomodate a dumb pupil’s lack of academic ability.
I know anecdotes are meaningless, but I’ve seen philosophy undergrads who could barely construct a logical argument (or grammatically correct sentence, for that matter) cruise through lower-division credits with As and Bs. Many professors in these departments seem to prize effort over analytical ability.

I go to an American school considered extremely rigorous
I got a 99% in real analysis
I don't know what a dedekind cut is, we didn't even cover it
I don't know the delta epsilon definition of continuity
our final exam was literally calc 1 with some basic proof shit
