Even among people who do put in more than zero effort to learn, some people don't understand the difference between reading something and studying it. I'm a slow reader already, but I am an excruciating slow studier. A lot of people don't have patience for that. My main thing is that I don't read a next sentence in a textbook until I make sure I completely understand 100% of what was said in the previous sentences. Some authors don't cater to this style, however, and sometimes there's errors in texts, and that is a major slow down for my style of studying. However, it works well for me. I think a big gap in most people's studying style is that they'll continue reading even when they're not quite sure what's going on. That's reading, not studying, IMO.
