You could say that science worship began in ancient Egypt when the priests were the only ones who knew anything about chemistry and they kept everyone in awe with their seemingly miraculous feats.
As time went on religion lost its charm and science itself became the object of worship without any intermediary. The Enlightenment contributed to science worship but its effects couldn't be appreciated at the time since religion was still relatively strong even though atheism was making inroads. Copernicus, Darwin, and Freud were heavy blows to theism, and the gifts of science became widely available thanks to ever increasing industrialization and technological improvement. If science is what gives us material well-being, then people will worship it since they no longer have any faith in otherworldly well-being.
And since not everyone can be a scientist, a lot of it will have to be taken on faith and needless to say (((some people))) will take advantage of this ill-placed faith.
That being said, I'm an atheist and I do think science worship is an improvement compared to theism. One can only hope people will learn to overcome this blind faith just as they have overcome religion, but genuine skepticism is hard to come by in any era.
