Either they want to die but don't have the guts to just off themselves, or they don't realize how dangerous prions really are. A global thermonuclear war would be more desirable apocalyptic event, from a survival standpoint, since at least any humans left after a decade would likely live long enough to create a new generation of offspring and continue on like before. With prions, the world would be fucked over for many decades or longer.
Massive amounts of prions are a doomsday type scenario for the entire planet.
Not even isolated islander tribes would be spared, as prions washed down rivers to the oceans would contaminate coastal waters and reefs and would be spread via aquatic life as well.
