Randomness isn't real. The default state of the universe is deterministic. However, aliens have found out that you can transmit information faster-than-light by fluctuating the parameters of the universe. These fluctuations affect how the universe works as a whole, so the behavior of certain experiments change over time as those parameters fluctuate.
Example: If you're at one end of the universe, you can slightly nudge a parameter, perhaps with some giant machine like a star-sized supercollider. Someone at the other end will notice it since their double-slit experiment shoots through a different hole now. They can decode this change into actual information, and therefore transmit information faster than light.
However, you can only modulate the rules of the universe so much. And this is a universally shared resource, similar to the RF spectrum on Earth. So to make the most use of it, you compress whatever data you're transferring as much as possible. Perfectly compressed data is indistinguishable from randomness. And so the parameters of the universe fluctuate randomly, which is why the universe appears to be random on a quantum level.
