People should have savings to rely on, and don't deplete the savings by growing food and raising livestock. Barter with neighbors for things they cannot grow or make. It's how humans lived for tens of thousands of years.
The whole idea of "a job" and "currency" is rather new thing for most people. Sure some forms of currency have been around since civilization began 10,000 years ago, but they were mostly only used by a few people, mostly the rich or city dwelling "non-productive" classes.
