Going into uni, picked EE. I guess i'd want to go into finance. Honestly I love buidling stuff.

Will I benefit from an engineering B.s?

What are some interesting niches I should consider? Not just money wise but interest wise as well. I don't want to be a code monkey but I'm a damn good programmer if I do say so myself

im an ee student. it's a lot of math and physics classes and a couple lab classes. Sure youll find a job you'll make 80K+ out of school with a bachelors as long as youre not retarded. Get a minor in business or something to make you more employable and so you make more money later on. Get people skills.

is it easy going from EE to quant stuff? I still want an engineering degree for the clout, plus my dad and all my uncles are engineers.

Also curious. what are some interesting majors that might not pay well but are really intellectually stimulating. Like getting a degree in logic or something

Microelectronics is a good choice. I studied it, it's been 16 years I finished my studies, and now I'm able to work as freelance for 500/600 euros / days, and I receive contract proposal at least 5 per month.

Apple is struggling with recruitment, and I now dozen of company who are dying to hire people like me (but I prefer to stay freelance, I dislike the 'company way of life', too much hypocrisy, too much liars).

Try to learn all the physical part, synthesis, place and route, power grid verification, etc...there are not enough people to do it, salary increases each years...

EE actually has a great niche in quant stuff if you do a lot of work with fpgas, you can probably land a high TC job at an HFT easy. Just make sure your software skills are also solid and you're golden.

Thanks guys, you've given me a lot to think about.
If I didn't have such a romantic view of learning engineering i'd be a finance major for sure.
I think I'll consider the microelectronics niche, but likely set myself up in uni (through internships, networking etc) for a quant type job.

Is being a quant fulfilling? Is it interesting work? I hope I'm not a glorified accountant.
I like being close to the math but I also don't want to turn a number cruncher

If you like mathematics, you could try automatics. My engineering school was specialized in microelectronics, electrotechnics and automatics.

Automatics was a really nice field, and I imagine with IA now, it should be one of the most important field for next decades. It required too much mathematics for me, but if you are interested in mathematics (it was modeling physical system, then correct them with matrix manipulation), I think this could fit.

Whatever, if you go in microelectronics, be sure that you'll find work very fast, and if you come in Europe, you'll be highly welcome, as we don't have enough engineers.

Also, as the field is considered as strategic, like nuclear power, we never (or very rarely) hire Indian (which are the most skilled in microelectronics out of Occident)...then, it's like a VIP club, we don't suffer from concurrency from emergent country, even if they know the job.

A meme. If you want to do quant stuff you'd do math/physics/cs/ee, preferably with a PhD.

If you're going for an EE degree and want to do quant stuff, there's two ways you can go: take tons of upper div math and statistics (other anons can recommend you good books here) or do fpga/os/algorithms. Either way you'll make a lot of money, but the difference in work will basically be: are you the person writing the algorithms, or are you the person implementing the algorithms? Both are highly challenging and complex positions (definitely higher barrier to entry with quant though) so either will work. You definitely won't be a glorified accountant if that's what your worried about.

90% of the EEs I know ended up as code monkeys. If you're not sure you're going to end up working in EE, might as well go for some sort of computing degree. I don't know any EEs who had a difficult time transitioning to code money so if you're ok with that fate and really enjoy learning about EE, sure, still do it. If your goal is a job in EE, it's going to be an uphill battle because there are far more EE degree holders than there are EE jobs.

One of my childhood friends earned an EE degree from RPI and went into finance. He was partially responsible for the Great Recession and now does real estate.

Makes sense, from just the cursory research on microelectronics jobs, it doesn't seem like you'd want them outsourced.
I was born and raised in Canada, but I'm an Indian. probably don't have to worry about any of that though?

I'll (likely) be studying in the US. Any advice on the level of education I should aim for? Should I think about a PhD or start looking for jobs right out of my undergrad?

My dad REALLY wants me to go into EE.... because it's the hardest one (he's a civil engineer).
I don't mind and I like the grit that comes with the "mind of an engineer", whatever that means.

If not EE I would've gone pure math and stat.

Kind of related, any good certs I should consider studying for? I've got a lot of free time until school starts in august. I was going to sign up for a summer internship but I'm sure we'll have a new variant by then.

Honestly, an EE degree isn't bad. It's better to have a CS degree generally but any of {math, physics, cs, ee} are generally accepted as good quantitative degrees. And if your dad is willing to pay for your EE degree to wank his ego, then just go for it.

Don't bother with certs.

Just go to a target school for undergrad, do any of the above majors, and you'll be chillin'.

Why do you consider studying how to design PCBs, do circuit analysis or solve problems in E&M to be better preparation for working in finance than a getting a degree literally called "finance"? You throw away four years of knowlege in physics and electronics to work as an analyst/quant/whatever, wouldn't it be more productive to study mathematical analysis and algorithmics in the context of financial markets from the very beginning of college? It all the electronics, software, system to drive robots, automated devices, and so on.

The best example are gyropod (two parallel wheel vehicles) which are constantly corrected to stay balanced.

When I say we don't hire Indian, it's only people with Indian nationality (in fact we don't hire nationality out of occident).
We don't care about origins or skin color, so you are surely Canadian, it's enough.
I'm not white, but grew up in France with french nationality.
If you have Indian nationality, it will be really harder, but not impossible, I've met several Indian at work in specific places, I could share to you if you want (it was in Switzerland and Belgium)

Another good side of microelectronics is I never suffered from racisms, as we need so much engineer, we really don't care about that, we just need brain and rigorous people.

Plus (for quants anyway) you don't pick up any bad habits from a finance major.

I think if you get your first job as an engineer it would be a lot harder moving to finance.
You'd have labeled yourself as "THE ENGINEER"

I completely understand getting into finance after majoring in CS or math, these degrees are very versatile after all. But EE and physics programs exist to prepare you for doing things ther than finance. Sure, you have quite a lot of math and some coding, but these are not the focus of the degree

I definitely love it. It’s a very flexible field that allows you to go into a lot of different disciplines. Someone already mentioned FPGAs as a gateway into the HFT industry, but you’d probably appreciate signal processing (there’s quite a bit of overlap with quant stuff due to dealing with time series). Other than that, I find the degree very fulfilling because it feels like you can build anything you want.

It depends if you're going to a garbage state school which is training monkeys to go make 60k a year at some shit company, or an elite institution that gives you a lot more freedom in your course selection to pursue higher math/stats and EE theory.

It's already popped though. Plenty of CS graduates are unemployed upon graduation, and companies hire based on whether not a person can code rather than any credentials.

Is it not a good thing if people are hired upon their ability and not credentials. I personally like cs because i know that how hard i work on my programming skills correlates to the likelihood of securing a good job which requires said skills. If i did something like EE, it's pretty much get an internship or die, whereas technical interviews for dev roles are different.
