diamagnetic material is material that responds to external magnetic fields by magnetically polarizing in a way to produce a magnetic field that opposes the external fields. it's caused by paired electrons' orbits being changed due to the external magnetic field.

to be fair, understanding $\vec{D}$ and $\vec{H}$ depends on understanding the decomposition of current into free current, polarization currents, and bound currents. it took me a loooong time to finally realize "free current" == "current not due to dipoles". free current technically includes high order multipole currents, but these can be isolated if needed to produce more complicated models of material response.
