They way i see it is that everyone i've met in real life who's going into CS at university is an absolute sperg retard who gets shit grades and is going to a shit university. Each change is a leap at first. Get used to it, I did and can assure you it gets better over time.
After leaving for industry I lost my job once, also a big leap, but to me it was not as big a deal as it was for many of my other former colleagues.

How realistic is it that I can get into a more interdisciplinary field as a physicist? I have always had a special interest in biology (mainly ecology and mycology) and geography, would love to get into a research group in one of these fields one day. I currently haven't even chosen a field for my bachelors thesis yet so the tracks are not set. What do I need to do to be able to do my masters, or possibly my phd in such a field? My current plan is to just write to a bunch of groups from all across the world with interesting papers I find in relevant journals and hope that one of them has any opportunities for me. Is this doable?

Bachelor + Masters all in one. In Sweden we got a specific degree where you apply for them both. So I am pursuing my bachelors at the moment but will never receive it unless I request it.

Plenty realistic. Medicine and biology relies on a lot of measurement devices such as MRI, and these are continuously developed. There is also a lot of data analysis based on measurements in order to reach conclusions.

The question is not "what should my major be". It is "what kind of life do I want" and then work backwards from there. A degree is not an end in itself. It's just a stepping stone to what you want.
For example, I wanted a middle-class lifestyle (home, car, 2.5 kids...). So I needed a job that would be able to support that. I settled on engineering and got a degree in it. Now I'm an engineer and saving for a house.

Academia was already miserable before the great financial crisis of 2008. Almost every country in the world slashed scientific funding as part of austerity measures and then never brought back.
In the US, it was the "great Curtailing" and every researcher still in academia today remembers it. It just isn't worth it.

Fellas I really need some help here. I screwed around a bit and basically missed 1.5 years of school. I could graduate "on time" at age 22 next year with the bare minimum for a Math BS. OR I could take an extra year and have plenty of time for higher level courses, Honors research, etc., and I would be graduating at 23. What should I do? I REALLY wanted to kill myself in HS for about three months. Started planning on buying an electrical cord and hanging myself, picking out objects that might be sturdy enough to hold me up until I died. Didn't do it. And then my sophomore year of college I wanted to kill myself again for about a month, but didn't really have an idea how. Thought a lot about drowning myself in the river near my college. Didn't do that either.

Since then I realized that if things ever got so bad I wanted to kill myself again, I should just go live in the woods for a month and get over it. I even have a bug-out bag for really just that purpose.

It's the most competitive course at the vast majority of the best universities in my country, so there's going to be an abundance of graduates coming out in the years to come. Then again, employment and the industry as a whole is projected to grow more than 3x as fast (14% 2018-2025) as something like engineering (4% 2018-2025), in my country at least. I have to apply in a week and i still don't know so i feel your pain, everyone gives advice but i always leave threads with the same confusion i had going in.

Also, i think i'm just going to do CS. I know CS graduates who have went into processing engineering, instrumentation, and consulting in various engineering fields. The only other choices imo are disciplines in engineering, physics, and that's all i can think of. If CS is a meme then the majoriy of intelligent students in my country are falling for a meme and wasting their potential, which i hope isn't the case.

Let's look at this for a moment. You went into programming, now you're working on another degree (a BA) and then you're planning to go to law school? This is a train wreck in the making. You're falling for the "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life" meme. Law school is literally soul crushing. There's a reason depression and alcoholism are so common in the profession. I wish I could say it gets better once you graduate, but it won't. You'll be worked to the bone to get your billable hours up and relegated to a cubicle. Meanwhile your loan debt (solidly in the 6-figures) is always on your mind. Nevermind that owning your own firm is a LOT of hard work and sleepless nights on top of that.

What is the career path like? Can you make decent money doing this? The technician positions on some of the national lab sites seem to pay better than others, but what happens after you work these jobs? Is there a clear path of increasing pay/specialty, or do you typically pivot into something else?

I've always wondered who gets to actually do the mechanical and physical work on high end government or military projects. Is this the career path to get there?

nah you would regret it. My dad wanted me to go to engineering but i argued with him and stuck to my more lofty and passionate choice, physics. Granted, physics isn't anything like majoring in philosophy but now that I'm on the job hunt i kind of just want to make money now. salary seems overrated until the day you actually need one.

I'm not working on another degree, I've always been working full time whilst finishing college. It's taken a lot longer but I hardly have any student debt as a result of it. I'm very close to finishing it. I started programming working under my dad when I just had my Associates, and found out rather quickly that it wasn't for me. Network engineering was easy but I don't feel satisfied or like my work is in any way meaningful due to shifts in the industry. Are we really just meant to sift about in mediocrity, where we don't actually give a shit about our work so long as the checks clear?

We had a few technicians in the lab when I did my PhD in experimental physics. I am not sure about their education but I think one had vocational school. I don't think any had a bachelors degree.
This was quite a few years ago so things might have changed drastically since then. Most positions that once could be filled by people with a bachelors, now demand a masters degree.

There's a postdoc position I might be able to get. The research is very interesting to me as well as potentially relevant technologically. The techniques are very familiar, the subject matter is somewhat different from my PhD but not so much that my experience would be worthless. To be honest it's more interesting than my PhD research has been. The institution is extremely highly rated, the PI is someone I know and I think they'd be great to work with.

The only real downside is that the PI is literally just starting. Naturally, they've not had the time to make a huge name of themselves in the field yet, and everything would have to be set up.

Any opinions? Is a postdoc with an as-of-yet relatively unknown PI in a lab that requires setting up doomed? My PhD went all right but I don't think I'll be able to just walk into the perfect postdoc and this is ticking the boxes that I was most concerned with (is it something I can do, do I care about doing it, will anyone else care about doing it, is the PI someone I can work with).

No. State run labs are notoriously understaffed. Unless you are working with the EPA or something, which some universities maintain a formal relationship with. My friend is in a situation like that with his professor.

If you 100% want to work at Jane Street then getting a physics degree is better. This is because those funds value more that you did a harder degree (and did well) because they totally isolate you from the finance in the day to day. You are just supposed to be smart and have smart trading ideas based on statistics, and all of the financial implications of that will be handled by someone else (and slowly taught to you during the job).

That said, Jane Street has their pick from the top 0.000001% of smart people so if you do not belong in that group, don’t even bother. They won’t hire you just because you got a physics degree from poodunk university. I hope we are talking Oxbridge tier stuff here. And if you are not then yeah it could be a fuckup because all traditional firms don’t really care about you having done a hard degree.

That said, I have gotten good finance jobs with a math degree and 0 training in econ/finance. Nothing like Jane Street though.

I dunno exactly, I got that off Wikipedia, but it seems like they convert your grades from A to F into a numerical value, and then the (weighted?) average of those is your GPA, with an F being a 0. That makes it sound like you still get credits for a course towards your degree even if you score an F, which sounds weird.

You can get a 0 gpa if you get Fs all the time and the highschool keeps pushing you along into upper classes. They'll usually do that to save face, as it looks terrible to have a 17 year old in intro to algebra or something. Once you turn 21 they have to kick you out, but even before that usually they'll only let you stay an extra year.

All three are rock solid safe for 10+ years.
Communications: 6G is coming, but is nowhere finished and after that 7G will come. There is just too much money in the system to run out of steam any time soon.

Microelectronics: the chip crunch will mean a lot more investment. As Moore's Law is running out of steam there will be research into new alternatives, new materials, new optics, and more. If practical room temperature superconductors appear, you will see a rush not seen since High Tc was introduced in the 1980's.

Power systems: Europe is enjoying record high electricity prices, making it clear that a lot is left to be done in power transmissions. New multi megavolt systems will be needed to transport hundreds of GW around. Add intermittent power sources such as wind to this mix and things get rather exciting. People fear the system is entering a state of instability because of rapidly varying load and supply.

Thanks. While setting up will definitely take some time, the experimental methods used are well-developed and the instrumentation would mostly come to us as a working package. So I think setting up might be a matter of months rather than years, and the position itself would be two-three years (depending on my preferences).

No. It would be helpful for getting into a very competitive PhD program however. Much of the time though the Masters project is not really your brainchild anyway and you end up doing some grunt work for what hopefully ends up as a publication where you are nth author. Probably there is some variance in this but I would say that a first author publication prior to a PhD is the exception and not the rule.

Anyway, with students varying so much in their quality it's not a given that every one can produce something worth a first-author publication even if the professor is great.

I’m 21 with no clear career choice. I’m currently working on an engineering major, but I have yet to get real REAL experience with it. Im in community college and I spend my free years of community college taking both general ed classes for credits and STEM classes to poke and prod around and try to see which field is for me, but COVID severely limited the classes I could take.

If you can handle the math but not the workload, you can switch to a math degree and get out no problem. Math classes typically involve a little bit less work the higher up you go whereas engineering is just fucktonnes of work.

After that, since everything is so fucked due to covid, you could probably do a masters degree in robotics and control systems. That ought to put you in both a comfy place and the right group of people to build cool shit for a living.

Thanks. I genuinely enjoy mathematics so I hope I do good. To be honest, if my strong interests were genuinely viable, like marine biology, I would be doing those, but I think it’s a road to hell, but it seems not that far off from my current road

So I graduated as a mechanical engineer last spring. Had 3.9 GPA, two internships, and research experience, yet for some reason I still can't find any work. I had a ton of interviews last spring, most of the interviewers saying that they really liked me, but all of them turned me down. I got a job offer to do contracting work for an established country a couple of hours out from where I live, but it pays 7k below the average starting salary for mech eng. grads in my area. I want to decline the offer, but I also don't want to slave away at a part time job to pay for student loans.

Thankfully I finally found a job after months of whining and getting you all to fix my resume. It's 22 USD/hr and right now it's techwork testing COVID samples. It's a 10 minute drive away from home. Theyre a startup and we get a shit ton of business because big boss only charges $75 per sample, which is the cheapest in the market around here.
So much money is flowing in that theyre building a new wing to expand the current lab space and also to set up research. I'll be placed in research once it's done, and i'll be trained in everything (switching from chem to biochem is interesting).

Anyway that's my blog post and I couldnt have done it without you guys. Godspeed, it gets better

I dont know the prof in question, but phylogeny is a perfectly valid way to get into bioinformatics. Once you get some experience in the field, you may also consider working with pure bio groups unless you want to do pure algorithm development..

Advice: As a math major, take biochem seriously, try to audit a lecture in it or something like that. Knowing even a few basics pays off immensely. Stryer is the classic textbook.
Also, try to get to know the biologists and their way of thinking. Its quite different from the way mathematicians or even statisticians normally approach problems.

Next year, I'm not taking any more gen eds, I refuse. And don't think I didn't try to avoid this. I chose Korean Culture and Science Fiction as my gen eds to try and avoid all the African- American studies Latinx studies, etc. classes, but I am still bombarded with this stuff.

step 1: Find a broad field or topic you're interested in.
step 2: find which professor or research group does that topic
step 3: send an email explaining your situation, your interests etc. and if they have something you can work on.

You don't need prior contact to a professor, at least where I'm from, just be polite and do some prior research on their topics and know where you wanna go. I wanted to work with FPGAs so I contacted the professor who had more advanced classes that I hadn't taken yet.

Im looking at the address bus from a cpu to memory and its connection to the chipset pin. in my little text book here it goes backwards, from A15-A12 to say that in the input must be 0011 for the chipset to be on, so why is it going backwards and not forwards? my assumption would be that it would go from A12-A15 and the input would need to be 1100.

The peers aren't too bright either. You got retards who want to go into masters right out of college, when there's at least three companies in our area that will pay for your masters. People who cannot code for shit (had to tutor a dumbass, fucker didn't know what a for loop was), and try hard self-taught dev esqe students who go on linkedin, apply for jobs and go to networking events, but have no social and technical skills.

CS majors are afraid of the growing entry level market. If you are a freshman, you have three years to apply to jobs, make a dumb project to pad out resumes, and then after the 2/3 internship you will be top ten percent of your school in job market.

I agree in the sense that if you can get a job and your self taught go for it. I would have done it. However, if you're not committed/smart you can easily fuck up and not get one.
Self-taught is best if you already going for another degree/trade, and can fall on that and use that sphere of knowledge for your job. So if I was a farmer, I could make some programs relating to software, sell it and/or consult with farmer's IT systems, and get in that way.

I don't know what to take from that post on reddit. I've always just study-maxxed with every hour of the day i have and done well, even with deadlines i've managed to grind it out no problem. I've never felt "overloaded", just that i had to work alot to cover the material. I've some experience in coding, i know all the fundamentals, and i'm assuming i'll studymaxx my way through the cs degree like i have with literally everything else. I don't really see it being that demanding if you just study ALOT and give yourself an hour or two to do other "downtime" stuff. When i learn the skills i could just grind out projects and make a portfolio. I feel ignorant when i say it doesn't seem overly instense, as long as you study alot.

I've considered doing engineering, because in engineering i won't be in class with people who are already experienced like i will with cs, but idk.

To add because I forgot, it's simply a matter of convention and communication. Writing that A12-A15 = 1100 would also be valid, giving the same result but you should also quickly realize why it's not optimal, because it quickly gets confusing when trying to expand it into the full bus, you cant as easily convert and swap between bit sliced 4 bits and hex.

I mostly see it written like in the book, when talking bits at least. For bytes you get a bit more variety in endianess, key is clearly marking it likke in the book, 15 downto 0, A15-A0 or A0-A15 etc. .

Same. I procrastinated so much that I ended up sending all my applications either on the last day or between one to two days before the deadline.
A professor at McGill contacted me a couple days after I sent my application. What's weird is that I didn't list him as someone I'd like to work with and I have no experience working in his subfield. My grades aren't exactly stellar either so I have no idea what drew him to my application. I'm thinking perhaps no one expressed interest in working with him so he has to resort to this to find students? But then, McGill is a pretty good uni and profs probably get more applications than they know what to do with.

if it's a field that largely places people in industry research positions, then an internship is good
if it's a field that tends towards pure academia (physics, etc.) then it still can be good depending on which type of subfield you work in, but pure research is expected

just an internship, but it's a big company and i've never had an internship so this will most likely be the difference for me.
right off the bat, it turns out Teams doesnt like firefox so the meeting was awkwardly demoted to a phone interview, not great. got dressed and cleaned my room for nothing.
there was a brief technically portion, which i wasnt expecting because it was only 30 minutes, but he seemed satisfied with my answers. kinda hard to explain how a tri-state cmos works over the phone though.
i think it went okay. there's gonna be a second interview in a week or so with a panel. im not sure if theres any other candidates or limited positions or whatever (i was reached out to, not the other way around).
should i send one of those hackneyed follow-up emails? how long should i wait?

I honestly think if you treat it like a job you absolutely can get through a PhD that you dislike because I did. The problem is that usually you don't have bossman breathing over your shoulder so if you don't give a shit you can just not do anything for a month and nobody cares. More importantly if you know that the PhD doesn't interest you before going into it then there is no point in doing one as you'll be better off with a real job anyway.

There used to be /cyb/ + /sec/ general running in /g/ but the /sec/ crowd was full of whining gatekeepers, and all indications are that one of them purged most /cyb/ regulars, killing the general.
