But the expected effect of a nuclear war, which is allegedly lots of forest fires, do not push soot to the stratosphere. The smoke just lingers at low altitude and is washed by rain.
So its a stupid hypothesis. Theres also experimental confirmation that giant fires dont cause a global winter: The kuwait oil fires. They blackened the sky in the persian gulf region, local temperatures dropped by a whooping 2 degrees and it all went away at winter with the rains. It had zero global effects.
Volcanoes can shot dust much higher than some surface fire.
