>>14105652Both are fucking stupid - the Brits only invented the slug because they wanted their own unit of mass, but prior to the 1920s the imperial convention was to simply describe all masses in terms of W/g. The mass of a pound was simply 1 lb/g. In many ways this approach is more intuitive since mass is not measured directly but calculated. It also has certain advantages in mechanics because it now let's you very quickly describe all forces relative to the local weight, acceleration always works out to some fraction of the local gravitational acceleration, etc.
All of the worst decisions made in relation to imperial units have always been the result of trying to change to be more like other measurement units instead of just sticking to its guns.
