Why are they so fat? Because he is a con man who is not interrested in technological progress so he just shoehorns existing technologies into his oversized toys. There are telecommunication organisations that try to make real progress but he, of course, doesn't care about them.
If nobody else does it, it is because technology isn't here yet, not because Musk is a genius. Obvious, but should be repeated.
