I am currently standing on two job offers. One to be a financial analyst and one to be a data scientist. Both would be a 'first-time' for me as in I've never held those specific titles before, and both would be paying me roughly the same.
However I am having trouble deciding which one to pick. My education is in pure mathematics and I never thought the meme of 'any job I want' would turn out to be true and now I can't even pick one because the offers I have are too good. But I thought that a way to get persectives other than my own could be by laying out the problem in /sci/ and seeing what people say. So here I go:
Data Scientist:
The current position would have me working in a relatively mature data science department in a big bank but not F500 (assets bellow 100 billion). The senior members of the team would put a lot of resources into building me up and eventually I could be working on my own on some very big projects, but none that particularly interest me.
Financial Analyst:
I would be working in a relatively new but strong finance division for a F500 company. There would be some quantitative elements to the position, but the main task would be to work with other teams within the company to guide their projects and ensure that everything goes right. Basically, my job would be ensuring that what everyone else is doing is having the desired effect in our bottom line. However, my boss is well aware of my technical background and surely would use me in the most technical projects and tasks to get good value out of me.
I know /sci/ is not for asking these types of question so I guess the thread can also be used to ask questions about how you land these types of jobs from a pure STEM background.
