In QM, states exist in Hilbert Space (Ket space, with a dual Bra space) which is a vector space with an inner product.
Observables are hermitian operators, the "good" states of that observable (where that observable is well defined) are eigenvectors of that operator, and the corresponding value is there eigenvalue.
