Progress has been rapid and still the leading scientists all agree that the field is only barely breaking the nascent stages with ~50 years needed to really realize much more with quantum computers. Things are exciting now because even gimped NISQ machines give everyone a lot to play around with on all angles, whether it’s building better machines or solving harder problems.
Unfortunately the media has a burning need to make headlines, so they stretch a lot of the claims out, especially those related to supremacy. There will be no point at which quantum replaces classical - this is something theorists proved decades ago - but that quantum is an important paradigm of computing alongside classical. Unlike nanotech and cold fusion, there have been many practical advances, and much to Locklin’s chagrin, even theorists have been solving practical problems to realize full quantum computers:
