Hello and welcome back once again to /GEO/.

Today we’ll be talking about fractures, joints, and surface ruptures found around the Earth... mostly in Bermuda, since I’m stuck on this godforsaken calcified sandbar for the foreseeable future.

Feel free to post anything Geology/ Geography oriented and bring pics if you have them.

Make sure to describe what’s going on in the photo so all of us Autists don’t have a fit about you mislabeling a rock.

Got a question about a certain structure/ mineral/ formation/ event? Try to describe it in detail so other Anons can (hopefully) provide you with some information.

Pic related: Strange Jointed fissures found in Bermuda- what caused them? Are they related to tectonics? Volcanic Activity? Or something else entirely?

Pictured: The Bermuda Rise is a seamount chain in the middle of the Western Atlantic, roughly 88 miles long from Argus and Challenger Bank in the South West at >50m deep, and Bowditch seamount in the North East, at 500m deep.

Situated in the middle, coming in as the largest and shallowest (>15m deep) is the Bermuda Seamount with the Bermuda Archipelago situated on top of it.

The seamounts are obviously volcanic, made from Basaltic lava that broke through the sea floor 34 million years ago in an event similar to the Hawaiian chain islands.

The top of the seamounts and the islands themselves are made up almost entirely of Calcium Carbonate, made from both Coralline algae and the exoskeletons of invertebrates that have been churned into sand by the elements and deposited upon the island by the elements, becoming wind blown sand dunes that lithify into limestone rock. We call this wind blown limestone “Eolianite,” after the Ancient God Aeolus, who travelled using the wind.

This Eolianite limestone can lithify into massive rocks upwards of fifty feet (~15m) tall. Due to the nature of its formation, you can tell which way the dune formed by the way it dips.

Pictured: A dune that moved landward from the south (left) to the north by wind over many centuries before finally weathering into rock through chemical lithification.

I’m glad you asked! In certain sections of Bermuda, there are interesting structures that seem to have no business being where they are. These a kind of fissure/ joint structure that only forms in two rough orientations: NW-SE, and NE-SW.

That’s shaped like an ‘X’ in case you couldn’t figure it out.

Pictured: The vast majority of these fissure structures are found in the east end of the island, along Five different sites, A, B, C, D, and E.

They all have the same general characteristics; two raised “lips” rising above the surrounding terrain, an exceptionally smooth inner slipface, and cemented infilling (rocks/ dirt that fell in and became attached to these “lips”).

Let’s take a look at this example, taken from Site A.

Here you can see the lips and how the stand out from the otherwise typical Karstic terrain. A gap takes the center, will rocks, pebbles and dirt filling the void between.

it's called a concretion. It's from mineral deposition. common in arid regions that have periodic groundwater intrusions that carry things like calcium

Pictured; The same fissure structure, moving further northeast. Note how it has now moved down to a lower rock formation on par with sea level.

In the distance you see Sites B and C, Coney Island and Ferry Reach.

These fissures in Site A all follow the same orientation, going SW-NE. Their proximity and continuous orientation indicate they’re all part of the same general structure in this area.

Pictured: Moving on from Site A to Site B, Coney Island. This is a unique little island by Bermudian standards due to the fact that, despite its incredibly Small size, it has a small brackish pond in its center that is barely separated by a thin band of limestone from its even smaller seaside cove.

The same structures found in A are nearly continuous in B, following the same structure and orientation.

The same structure appears to be crossing the small harbor here and continuing on to the next half of the island, despite the rocks clearly not being visibly connected.

Without assuming too much, it would make sense to think that this structure is not just similar to that on Site A, but is actually the same fault altogether- whatever caused this was clearly some sort of large-scale instability.

Did it happen all at once, like an earthquake? Or was the process something much slower?

These have been filled almost entirely by sand and soil, but despite that the rift manages to just peak above its surroundings.

The constant parallel structure of these rifts as well as their orientation all being in the same direction seems to indicate a certain mechanism is at work that has caused them all to form this way.

Any ideas what it could be? Tectonics at work (hint; Bermuda is in the center of a tectonic plate)

Pictured: what seems to be a massive Clastic Dike, or another structural discontinuity in this rock wall at Site B, midway through the island. Note how, once again, there are lips in the brush above the cliff face. This is part of the same structure. Again. Backpack for scale.

Whatever this thing is, here, it’s 5 meters tall. It’s muuuuuch bigger than originally thought. Whatever force acted on this rift structure as it formed, it must’ve been very powerful to be able to reach through five meters of rock down to sea level.

Everything around it is Eolian Limestone- yet the rockface in the center is absolutely smooth.

There doesn’t appear to be any sort of displacement involved, as the strata face on the left appear to match up almost perfectly to the strata lines on the right (don’t believe me? Draw a line across from one to the other. Perfect match.)

What is the reason for this strange change in texture?

Finally reaching the end of site B, we can see how the rift originally cut right through the Island path, back to the shoreline once again.

Pictured: a smaller vertical rift structure with keys for scale, northeast of the five meter clastic dike. The two line up perfectly, meaning they would’ve been connected before the rock between was mined out to make space for the small road that now occupies the space between the two structures.

Facing directly opposite of this second vertical dike, the rift marches on, once again northeast toward the ocean. Note how chaotic the surrounding limestone terrain is; clay, rocks, and slipface strata have been irreparably damaged by weathering, but the lips are as distinct as ever.

Saying Goodbye to B we say Hello to Site C, Martello Tower.
This area is locally known for having a fort garrisoned by the British Army in the Napoleonic Wars. It’s distinct white tower is made from highly polished limestone that allows it to reflect light for miles around. But we’re not here to look at a fort. We’re here to talk about ROCKS.

Alright back from piss and dick break.

Site C carries the trend of jointed fissures found in B and A at the same general orientation of NE- SW, with the same distinctive karstic lips.
Here we see some of the largest joint structures, Coming up from the ocean cliff side. (Refer to Site C map, we’re currently at the southernmost fissure for this locality.)

The joint moves upland, toward a now derelict fort established in the 1680’s. This is known as “Burt’s Fort” and was used to guard the entrance to St.Georges harbor when colonists first arrived in Bermuda’s infancy.

Another view that shows just how distinctive this joint is from the surrounding landscape (highlighted by the black bracket, left hand side of the ocean).

Even at a distance of over 100 meters, the distinctive cream white color of this fracture’s infilling allows it to stand out from the relatively darkened limestone.
