Science reporters frequently get it wrong because they have no training in or understanding of science and are pressured to write things to maximize social media traction. So they write something false with a catchy headline, get their twitter retwits (or whatever they're called), then make a correction afterwards. Regardless journalists will be first in the ovens.

It used to be that a journalist being forced to issue a correction was a shameful thing. It cost significant credibility and sometimes they had to resign over it. Today it's just standard operating procedure. Though you should consider putting yourself in the oven, because you stopped buying newspapers and started absorbing (((free))) information from facebook et al. Journalists are just adapting to the landscape you've forced them to survive in by not shelling out a few bucks a day for proper news reporting.

DNA isn't genes, genes are the available information inside a cell and yes those are changed. Permanently for long lived cells.
