Shit can't travel through space faster than light, but space itself is expanding. It's like playing a game of chess on a board that keeps adding spaces between pieces - a king still moves one space at a time, but if you're adding space at a fast enough rate it can't get from one side of the board to the other.

Regardless of what gay physicists want you to believe the "fabric" of space time behaves very similar to a fluid, particles push through this fluid and a massless particle like a photon has the least resistance in this fluid. Dark energy and the expansion of the universe is basically just fluid being added creating more space between every object in the universe. So technically from the reference frame of an object on one side of the universe an object on the other side is moving faster than the speed of light, but this doesn't mean the particle itself is, because it can't, due to the "friction" of space
