story time: i do EE research and startups. we hired a guy with a math and CS degree to do our internal IT and some nuts and bolts stuff for simulations. when confronted with the latter, although well-versed in vector calculus and PDEs, he couldn't make heads or tails of the physics, and thus he was practically useless in that respect. we had to let him go after a while because it just wasn't working out.
there really is a significant gap between knowing math and applying math. take a physics course. even if you don't go into a field where you get to apply physics, practicing applying math to model things will make you better at both math and the applications you are interested in.
