cable is 80m long and poles are 50m high. the cable is 10m off the ground in the middle. the problem is symmetric around the middle. the cable length for half the problem must be 40m = 50m - 10m, and the cable has to be hanging straight down to be at 10m with no extra slack.

if this wasn't the case, the problem is an interesting mechanics problem and the solution is a catenary.

Quite simple once you realize it.
Since poles are 50m, for a rope to reach 10m off the ground from the top of the pole it must go down 40m.
Since it's a parabola, it does this twice going up->down and down->up. That's 80m. The equation for the pole distance is cable length-80m.

picture shows left side and right side of the cable as having the same length

the only way that can happen is if each curved segment is 40m long

the issue is, if each side has 40 meters in that position, if you cut roght at the middle each cable half would have more than 40 meters in a vertical position (parallel to the poles), this is because the hypotenuse is always bigger than the other 3 sides

so the cable either isnt 80 meters long or it isnt suspended 10 meters from the ground

Here's a realistic way to stumble upon the solution if you solve it methodically, but not mechanistically: the lowest point of the rope is obviously in the middle. It can't be a parabola if it's drawn to scale. If it was, the equation for half of it would be y = x^2 + 10. If you solve for x you get x = sqrt(40). Since that's just half the full distance must be 2 * sqrt(40) = 12.65 m. It's very clear though that the distance is greater than 50 m if it's drawn to scale.

Best case it's a trick question, which by definition is confusing unless you expect it.
I've never seen a math problem where the illustration is a lie. Often problems are literally just something like "here's the triangle, what's alpha?".

All parabolas follow the form $f(x)=\frac{x^2}{4p}$ where $p$ is the distance from the vertex of the parabola its focus. If we look at the picture as if it was a Cartesian set of coordinates, we can clearly see that, if the distance among the two poles is $2d$ $f(d) = 50-10 = \frac{d^2}{4p}$ $d=\sqrt{160p}$
Now, some more math
The function that gives you the length of the curve of $f$ over $a$ and $b$ is $F(x)=\int_a^b{\sqrt{1+[f'(x)]^2}dx}$ then if the distance among the poles is $2d$ we have that $80 = \int_{-d}^d\sqrt{1+\frac{x^2}{4p^2}}dx$
From our previous statement:
$80 = \int_{-\sqrt{160p}}^{\sqrt{160p}}\sqrt{1+\frac{x^2}{4p^2}}dx$

Because the picture is meant to be disingenuous
Think about what this would actually look like in real life - it'd be two poles stuck together with basically a loop hanging from them that ends ten meter above the ground. Yet in this picture, the poles are far apart and there's some tension

It's basically a test of how well you can bend the truth while still being "technically factual" which is the skill they prize most in Amazon management

Even if you hang an 80m cable from a single 40m pole, you're probably going to be a few inches shy from touching the ground, unless it's a *really* skinny&flexible cable
