Category theory is the language of most mathematical theories (algebraic geometry, topology, differential geometry, group theory, etc.) so much that if you're a mathematician you probably already know category theory without ever reading about it.
It's also a meme, because just like we use the language of sets to write about maths formally, we do that with categories, but they can be studied by its own resulting in pure autism. Some of those autisms ended up being useful (see five lemma and snake lemma), but again the analogue with set theory holds: advanced set theory has some applications for the rest of math, but mostly is a totally disconnected field, the same goes for categories
