Many years ago, I read a sci-fi book I don't remember the name of, where the premise was that the atmosphere of a planet was unbreathable, but as you went deeper into canyons, it was, so all life had to congregate inside of a crisscross of canyons, and the upper surface was super scarce. Is this plausible?
