Well, they're mainly for the purpose of reusable rockets. If they don't launch, they failed. JWST's launch succeeded but that's just step 1 for a telescope.

Reusable rockets were being used back in the 60s. It is spinning wheels in place at this point to prevent a drying up of capital until something can get us out of the gravity well that isn't just chemical propulsion
