Did any of you get interested in math later than most? For me, it was a year after graduating high school. I ended up enrolling in university to study mathematics, after teaching myself from the ground up for around a year. I was interested in logic and number theory at the time. Now I’m about to start my third year and, instead of trying to catch up with kids that have been obsessed with mathematics for years, I have spent half of the time feeling unmotivated and demoralized. My grades are alright, but there’s always something that makes my gaps of knowledge and lack of intuition clear. Even worse, it seems like I still spend less time thinking about mathematics than they do, making it impossible for me to ever catch up (I also fell for the “take computer science courses” meme, which used up a lot of my time). I plan to take mathematics more seriously this year, and I will (hopefully) be taking real and complex analysis, measure theory, number theory and mathematical logic. I guess it’d be nice to find someone with a similar story now that things get more difficult. Sorry for blogposting, by the way.
