How do I turn chemical structures to chemical formulas

Am I retarded or was this never taught at school? How do I look at a chemical structure and extract the chemical formula from it?! Especially when dealing with structures I'm not familiar with.

With formula, you mean if you drew benzene, the formula would be C6H6?

The kinks in the line represent one carbon. Carbon can make 4 bonds. All the carbons in benzene are connected to 2 carbons. The rest of the bonds are assumed to be Hydrogen, to save time drawing it out. So each carbon on benzene is connected 2 two carbons and one Hydrogen.

So you just count the number of atoms. Your OP is C8H10N4O2.

Every corner (intersection of two lines) is a Carbon. Every C should usually have 4 bonds, so assume all of these 4 bonds not to another C or other visible atom is to a Hydrogen. Simply count the number of atoms to get your formula

Are you meaning how do you get the shortened structural formula? The chemical formula is obtained simply by counting the atoms.

Formulas are for retarded gen eds. The structure is the best way to view chemicals, especially in organic chemistry arrow pushing. The formula tells you little to nothing about the molecule while the structure shows stability, bonds, orientation, the list goes on.
