The Jetsons was a fucking parody of 50s pulp sci-fi bro. And Blade Runner was based on a soft sf novel with no basis in fact. At no point should anyone have believed these were reasonable visions of the future.

Why do you think we are near any kind of technological limit? This has been said several times throughout history and has been proven false every time.
I think the biggest limiting factor these days is our economic systems reward incremental improvements over revolution because why spend billions on R&D for something new when you can make a marginal improvement and sell millions of units to people that also brought your last product.

I think smartphones are up there with the Internet, even if its just a combination of already existing tech it did change a lot the way we live.
And that's kind of why we don't have flying cars I guess? Cause its easier to make say smartphone and get filthy rich, I guess maybe the problem is in the filthy rich motivation every company has.

I guess people are also naive thinking that all the stuff they see in the movies is just a matter of time. But hey, we have electric cars and we can watch porn pretty much anywhere on the planet, that's something.

Oh yeah I agree it's going to get exponentially harder to make breakthroughs and it's going to take more money and resources than before. I don't think we are anywhere near a limit and just at the point it's less economically viable than the free market will support.
This is why government funded research should be a priority and the government should hold patents to recover the outlay.

OP's point wasn't that they were reasonable, his point was the authors chose a the time span that the technology in that fiction would be most believable.

with regards to mars colonies: von Braun was sketching out in the 1940's plans to go to mars, considering the political conditions at the time it wasn't that unreasonably for people to believe it was on the horizon in the 50's and 60's. Yet when the propaganda win with the moon landing was done he was brushed aside. I know this is /sci/ not /pol/ but just to demonstrate why tech development is shifting to the private sector. Private sector innovation has its positives and negatives, on one hand things like medical technology are seeing very impressive innovations, on the other hand you have kids being put in front of tablets when they're toddlers.
