Because your individuation is of the substance of spirit which as a Subject already knows itself, but needs to go through this process of Bildung (education?), and hence all you are doing, when reading Hegel, is remembering what you as of the Spirit already know as the Spirit.
(This is where German is nice with Be-kanntsein versus Er-kennen:)
You already have familiarity; it is now a matter of recognizing. (wiktionary or any other decent dictionary the german terms "bekannt" and "erkennen" and understand the prefixes if this sentence seems odd).
It is important to always be pursuing actual knowledge and not these fading dogmatic disciplines that falsely claim the term "science" for themselves. (if you want to see a beautiful humiliation of every "science", which includes math, physics etc., read his foreword).
Your subject is of the subject of Spirit; only Spirit matters as it confronts itself; your death "is as insignificant as a sip of water".
I don't presume to know what Hegel meant. I know what the Spirit knows in his process of becoming conscious (Bewusstwerden), and therefore I, of the Spirit, know what Spirit knew of itself in Hegel, and knows of itself in me.
