Everything in the universe wants an easier way to interact, and if it can't withstand it something else annihilates it. Quarks were first observed in the November Revolution of particle physics. They have "color charge". All that means is instead of positive/negative, you have three poles, and that worked well with the numbers from deep inelastic scattering on the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
