probably
but the plasma consists of a few of grams at best, so there isn't that much stuff really that could transfer the heat in the first place.

yes, because if the fuel touches any other matter than itself, the fusion doesn't really work or the energy dissipates in a way we can't use. in short terms, most commonly used fusion creates from a hydrogen isotope mixture a new high energetic particle that doesn't interact with the magnetic confinement since it's neutral and therefore moves fast in every direction.
you can then cover the outside of the reactor with a material that does interact with it so the neutron transfers its energy to become heat which is then again used to power steam turbines. the heat doesn't come from the super heated plasma, but the neutrons rushing away from it. if fusion stops, the whole process stops and the energy created reaches zero, while the thin gas dissipates and transfers its tiny heat capacity to the walls.
to keep the magnetic confinement up and the plasma stable for considerable amounts of time is probably our only problem left to solve, but we're making progress.

If that's the case, then magnetic confinement is for the purpose of

not preventing the reactor materials from melting?

yes exactly. can't really bring the fuel to 100 million degrees if it touches the metal walls for the entire time the fusion is supposed to run. and i can imagine other matter disturbs the fusion process, maybe even giving unwanted side products, so it's important not to let it touch anything but other fuel.
but again, the entire fuel from a fully loaded fusion reactor is just a few grams of hydrogen mixture, even if it is at 100 million degrees, there is hardly any energy contained because there is so little matter that could transfer this heat.
just like very fast sand grains burn up in atmosphere and cause no damage are no problem even if they still cause a shooting star because of their initial speed. they're still just grains of sand.
