>>14055742Like group cohomology and w/e AT and stuff is related to that, which is quite a lot! Not only do you have the immediate "the (co)homology of a group is the (co)homology of its classifying space" connexion (where the former is the group (co)homology and the latter is your favourite "space" (co)homology"), but there are lots of ways to approach group theoretic problems from a topological perspective. For example, a silly thing you can do topologically but not if you restrict yourself merely to algebra is the following: Suppose is a finite group, and let be such that there is a faithful representation . Take the classifying spaces to get a fibration . Now loop (and use for any group ) to get . Now, perform your favourite tricks to and one of the spaces around it (doesn't necessarily preserve the fibration so one of them may not come along...) and extract homotopical data from w/e you get out of that. Use this homotopical data to obtain homological or cohomological data and reconnect that to the (co)homology of . Stuff like that. I'd rather not go further into details before getting out of uni!
