This is a picture i just took of the orion nebula.
I used a Skywatcher Evostar 80/600 PRO ED-APO EQ3, and an iphone camera.
I'm still really new to this, and both my gear and skills are lacking, but i thought some of you may enjoy this. As more gear comes in and i learn how to do this better, i'll keep posting these threads.

if you only plan on doing astrophotography, you should go straight into looking for a CCD camera like picrel, they can be expensive so research extensively, but i'd look into a second hand option first.
also a bhatinov mask.
astrophotography is about technique more than anything else: cold environment ideally freezing, exposures at objects away from the horizon and letting your equipment cool for at least an hour or 2 before your exposures.
you have a refractor, so not only do you have the benefit on no defraction lines but once your tube is at ambient temp, you don't have to recollimate.

for planets look into apparent diameters and position in the sky, mars' disc at it's closest will have an area over 20 times the area than at it's furthest.

I was thinking about picking up a telescope for my wife and I as a hobby. Any recommendations? I'd like to see something other than the moon.

Thanks, that is a lot of good advice, i'll look into all of it.
I was thinking about getting a cheaper tier CCD, something like the ASI120MC. For now, as a uni student i don't have more than about 2-300 a month to spend on a hobby.
As for where to post these, i some times see this kind of thread here, but if it's more appropriate, i'll post on /p/ instead.

Planets are a lot of fun, unfortunatly this time of year is not easy for a beginner here. Saturn for instance goes down about one hour after sunset. Mars is not visible at all, as it is only up during the daytime.

Well i am only a beginner, probably not the best guy to ask for advice. I hear newtonians are popular with beginners, they give you the largest aperture for price. I wanted to get into astrophotography, which is why i bought an apochromatic refractor, but those are really expensive. A simple refractor could be fun too, they give clearer picture, but the same aperture will cost twice as much.
There are some really good youtube videos on the subject.

Anon was pretending to disbelieve that anybody can see actual stars, but to believe instead that all those points of light are just Truman-Show-like projections on a screen.
