If the Moon is seen 4 degrees above the horizon, with the phase showing that the Sun is 5 degrees directly below it, this can mean:
1) You are on the equator at the equinox a bit before dawn, looking east, with the Moon at a node (orbit crossing the ecliptic), or
2) You are slightly above the Arctic circle at the winter solstice at what passes for midday, looking south, with the Moon midway between nodes.
I'm sure there are intermediate cases as well. I think, if you don't have any time or date info, you at least also need to look at the orientation of the maria visible on the Moon's surface.
