Let's see if that actually happens. My own suspicion is that supporting gateway via SLS will sap NASA's resources so a lunar base can't move forward. Just like the the exotic ISS applications died (propellent depot, shipyard).

Wait, hold on, SLS Block 2 is getting single-cast carbon fiber SRBs? That's actually a huge deal since it removes the Challenger failure mode and lets the thing launch in cold weather. Now if only the RS-25s were air lightable you could use four carbon fiber SRBs for the first stage and put like 300 tons in lunar orbit.

I wonder, is Starship the only vehicle that could fly people to Gateway? Besides Orion, of course. Falcon 9 doesn't have enough delta v to throw Dragon into Lunar orbit and Falcon Heavy is not human rated.

As long as they're committed to continuing SLS it will drain their resources. Unless it's cancelled they will use it. I don't see Biden expending political capital to cancel it, so that probably means another 4 years of SLS minimum.

It's on the drawing board right now. The core stage is real. I saw it down at Michoud. They have the current SRB's done, waiting to be launched out of Florida... I don't see any hardware for the advanced boosters though except that they are going to somehow try and grift even more billions out of congress and that becomes the competitor to Starship which is already routinely flying for dirt cheap. It's that easy in rocketry

Honest to God there is a SLIGHT chance they will keep SLS but decide to venture away from the shuttle derived meme and just give it a new kerolox or methalox core with engines from scratch (contract aerojet? take BE-4s?) and use the advanced boosters to really ramp up its capabilities because they already have all the infrastructure for the upper stages and fairings and launch sites and whatnot

The point was speed, sadly. Just use spare shuttle SRBs and a Delta IV upper stage. They thought it would be easy to convert orangetankbad to vertical loads but it wasn't.

the challenger failure mode was caused by allowing the o-rings to wear down on reuse and it was fixed immediately by replacing the o-rings every time. the sls srbs won't be reused anyway so it's a moot point.

Making an air lightable RS-25F for a third gen upper stage would be very nearly the holy grail of expendable rockets.

If you could air light it multiple times it'd be better than a J-2X - twice the thrust and 25s higher Isp. The RS-25 is the greatest hydrogen engine ever made. Only the Energia's RD-0120 got close, but it can't be reused.

It's also sort of a dead end - the RS-68 can't be clustered like the RS-25 can. If not for that fatal flaw we'd have had SLS class capacity shortly after the Delta IV's debut. Imagine a Delta V Heavy rocket with twelve SSME equivalents and a bunch of solids for the first stage, and another SSME equivalent for the upper stage.

The mass margins were that tight. 1970s hardware was fat and chunky. Remember Energia also used a high Isp hydrolox core stage and the Soviets were not exactly short on staged combustion options.

Tory stated it had something to do with the alloy they use for Atlas V which is porous by nature. When you anodize it you make a thick layer of aluminum oxide (aka corundum) which provides a buffer to chemical reactions against the hull. IIRC it is heritage from Titan tanks. This just begs the question why they didn't change alloys though lol. At least that copper color ends up looking kino. Idk what anodized starship would look like, presumably the process would add iron oxide (rust) and would either lead to a beautiful coppery rainbow bluish purple, or a shit brown. Probably the latter. 304L doesn't need anodization though so

That’s still a lot of mass put into orbit that you don’t really need. For a reusable second stage what you really need is: attitude control and a heat shield. If you optimize the mass of those two things you inevitably get a starship architecture.

The picture you posted. Those wings have a lot of mass that you don’t really need for anything.
The body of the vehicle itself is enough to aero break and get you down to 300km/h in the case of starship. Your engines can cancel that like it’s nothing.
You already need to carry the engines anyways so any landing gear is wasted mass and added complexity.
What do you really need wings for then? Attitude control. But fins are actually better at that.

You can get literally tens of kilometers per seconds of propellantless delta-V and enormous angles of deflection on interplanetary trajectories. Imagine a gravity slingshot with a periapsis inside the atmosphere, and then using lift+gravity while flying upside down to STAY at periapsis to get even more momentum transfer and angle of deflection, up to a full 360° rotation before drag starts dominating and you lose velocity... or you just keep looping around to capture into planetary orbit or even deorbiting entirely straight from transfer velocity without expending a gram of propellant. Yes but "more" probably means increasing from 5-10N to 50-100N. Maybe I'm wrong? but I doubt the tradeoff is worth it. Even with low thrust you still get to Pluto in like 4 years and you can brake if you want to (or aerobrake at any destination with a sizeable atmosphere for really fast travel time)

Sure there is. Everyones working on new engines to produce more efficient thrusts.

Raptor is designed to be produced at cost of $1000 per ton of thrust. Thats an extremely cheap engine.

It doesn't need to be demonstrated, only the theoretical underpinnings need to be fleshed out before engineering can work out napkin math. Then that can lead to experimental propulsion designs.

Cost effectiveness/practicality/performance is a real metric and everyone in the commercial industry is chasing the best possible rocket engine technology that way.

It looks dumb but it's actually not THAT bad. Would have been the cheapest option in some regards. NASA (congress) was dead set on turning shuttle into a vertical conventional rocket, but it turns out the orange tank can't handle loads on top so they had to redesign everything
The irony though is that we are so far head in SLS development it would be too expensive to revert at this point. All the infrastructure has been modified to now produce "shuttle" hardware the SLS way so whatever we live in a society

Exactly. I don't understand how you can make fun of Ares I when SLS has TWO of the EXACT SAME solid boosters burning right under Orion. If the core stage rips itself apart and those boosters shear off and go flying you're gonna have double trouble. But either way that LES would most likely get you out in time. Ares I was kino and was the right move.
The only problem was that, as a jobs program, Constellation basically was doing what SLS is doing now but times two. Because they had to build and test and fund Ares I and Ares V it was always going to be way too expensive. But seeing now how SLS has lost literally ALL of its cargo missions and has been designated to only-Orion, I think Ares I would have been a way better option for getting a capsule out to the Moon

She was just misunderstood. SRB's are pretty dumb but you can't deny they are dummy cheap and have pure throooost. And for a first stage that just needs to get you up in altitude through an atmosphere it kind of works perfectly. No hydrogen sustainer stage that can have problems and cause you to scrub. Just one single SRB waiting to go. Light her up and launch until it runs out of fuel and stage from there

This is basically what the OmegA proposal was. Its time has come and gone because reusable liquid boosters are cheaper than expendable SRBs for first stages.

Are the advanced boosters upgraded in thrust? or just reliability. If you get even more thrust out of them you might as well put switchblades on it and fly it back to the launchsite lol. That would be an almost unstoppable configuration, especially if you went to a methalox depot and topped off whatever mass budget you might have cut into. You could easily get to gateway

Well they're the only difference between Block 1B and Block 2 SLS aside from the fairing, and Block 2 has 25% more payload to LEO, so I suspect they've got more thrust.

This rabbit hole is so deep and weird. So way back when, Orion was originally chosen as part of the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) program. It consisted of 2 teams lead by LM and boeing. Lockheed originally proposed a space plane, but even weirder is that no public information is available for what exactly Boeing bid. It is believed though that Boeing’s proposal was similar, if not the exact same thing, they bid for the earlier Orbital Space Plane (OSP) program—which it turns out is a fucking CAPSULE. Why would they bid a capsule for an orbital space plane competition??? What is going on here

I was reading the Columbia report the other day and came across this. It seems that Boeing was proposing BOTH a capsule and a spaceplane as far back as 2003. It was meant to be a medium-term stop gap between retirement of the Shuttle and before VentureStar or whatever replacement came online.

It's a meme. Senator Richard Shelby got so mad at a ULA proposal for orbital hydrolox storage that he threatened to defund the entire manned space program if anyone said d*pots again. Shelby learned enough about rocketry to understand why orbital refueling made SLS obsolete but used his knowledge for evil.

nah, just evolve your hydrolox stage from it's pitiful chemical base level to a rather meh solid core nuclear rocket, use the energy from the reactor to electrolize water and use the hydrogen as propellant, oxygen as afterburner, mass that would go to solar panels goes into the reactor

That would be stupid for many reasons, notably that LANTR engines need to be completely replaced after 10-12 missions while a solar or beamed power depot can work indefinitely and supply an entire fleet. NTP really isn't worth it except for the outer system, and at this point I'm willing to bet direct fusion drive will be ready fast enough to make fission NTP a permanent dead end.

Reminder that if Shittle hadn't used hydromeme, it wouldn't have needed foam insulation on the tank, and the stupid foam wouldn't be able to strike the stupid tiles.
