They came up with dark energy because there was a discrepancy between predicted expansion and actual expansion. Prediction was slower, but observed expansion was faster, way faster. They didn't come up with it because they needed to prevent a big crunch into a singularity "in the calculations" or whatever.

Same with dark matter, it was originally proposed because stars on the galactic rims weren't rotating at the speeds they should have. They were rotating around the galactic cores too fast.

The problem is that the standard model is both experimentally verified as being accurate but the existence of massless spin-2 particles implies the existence of a gravitational force with very specific properties (in the same way that the existence of massless spin-1 particles implies Maxwell's equations) which do not seem to match with dark matter.
The problem is actually more serious and complicated than "just add in antigravity bro"

what an absurdly perverse reaction to observing reality and having it not line up with your predictions.
a sane person would note the rotation speed and the discrepancy with their predictions and assume that it was their predictions that was at fault who, not the stars.
imagine trying to lay the blame for a discrepancy like that on an inanimate object rather than questioning your own beliefs, completely irrational
